William Henry Singer Jr. — A Winter’s Night
American painter William Henry Singer Jr. (1868–1943) was known for atmospheric landscapes shaped by his experiences in both America and Europe. After studying painting in Pittsburgh and briefly at the Académie Julian in Paris, Singer settled in Europe with his wife, Anna Brugh Singer, eventually making their home near Olden on Norway’s Nordfjord.
A Winter’s Night reflects Singer’s distinctive approach to landscape painting, with its dramatic snow-covered mountain, dark evergreens, and restrained blue-green palette. Soft brushwork and muted tonal variations create a quiet, almost dreamlike winter atmosphere, emphasizing mood and light over precise detail.
Singer exhibited widely throughout his career and was also an important patron of the arts in Norway and the Netherlands. Following his death, Anna established the Singer Laren museum in the Netherlands in his honor, preserving their significant artistic legacy.
