A well-preserved Scandinavian immigrant’s trunk, dated 1831, with its original painted surface. The domed lid and front panels are decorated with stylized heart motifs and foliate flourishes, framed by painted blue bands and accented with the inscribed initials “SM” and “RD.”
Such trunks were traditionally crafted as dowry or travel chests, serving both as secure storage and as a meaningful expression of heritage.
The warm patina, worn edges, and original iron hardware reflect its long history of use, while the painted decoration remains vivid, embodying the folk-art traditions of early 19th century Scandinavia. Features stylized heart on a red and blue surface.
