  • Early 19th C. Hand Painted Swedish Trunk

A charming and highly decorative Swedish country trunk, richly adorned with traditional folk-art painting in the classic kurbits style.

Please note this product requires white glove shipping at an additional charge.

    Details

Executed on warm grained pine, the façade and lid are framed with hand-drawn borders and embellished with exuberant floral garlands in soft red, charcoal, slate blue, and cream pigments — a palette typical of rural Scandinavian interiors of the late 1700s–early 1800s.

At the center, the original owner’s initials and date of  1817 are delicately inscribed, a personal touch often commissioned at the time of marriage, suggesting the trunk once served as a bride’s dowry or household linen chest. The gently domed lid, iron key escutcheon, and pegged construction further reflect its authentic provincial craftsmanship.

The interior offers generous storage and retains the honest patina of centuries of use, making it as practical as it is decorative. Today it functions beautifully as a blanket chest, toy box, coffee table, or entryway bench — bringing warmth and history to both traditional and modern interiors. A wonderfully expressive piece of Scandinavian folk art — soulful, functional, and unmistakably authentic.
