Carved Scandinavian Weaving Shuttle
Sweden, dated 1799
Hand-carved wooden weaving shuttle of elongated boat form, dated 1799 and inscribed with the original owner’s initials. Crafted from a single piece of hardwood and hollowed to hold a bobbin, this shuttle exemplifies traditional Scandinavian handloom weaving tools of the late 18th century.
The presence of the carved date and initials suggests the piece also functioned as a personal or ceremonial object, possibly made as a gift or to mark a significant life event. The surface retains a deep, warm patina with wear consistent with age and use.
A rare survival from rural textile culture, valued today as both a folk-art object and a tangible link to early domestic craftsmanship.
