This rare 19th C. Norwegian pine scutching knife has the original green paint.
Dated 1852, this scutching knife was ceremonial, given to the groom from the bride. These tools were primarily used for scutching flax, a step in the process of turning flax plants into linen fibers. The user would strike the flax against a scutching board with the "knife" to remove woody bits from the fibers.
Rare.
