Will Cooper's Traveling Chair

Will Cooper

The inspiration for our chair is a derivative of the design narrative found in our forthcoming Baltimore hotel, Ulysses, opening 2022. The story takes place in a 1920s residence that plays home to worldly and well-traveled artistic characters and wealthy bachelors. Inside the hotel, a mélange of historical references come together under one roof to create an immersive experience and we envisioned our Cabana chair to follow suit.

Like many of ASH NYC's projects, we found inspiration in historic references, foremost the chair’s faux tortoise application which reflects the material’s primary role in our lobby and guest rooms.

Equally inspired are the fabric and skirting silhouette which are a nod to the textiles and upholstery techniques of the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Overall, Ulysses – and our Cabana chair – are about the bold and unexpected; the duality between femininity and masculinity; the old world into a new.
